Starting with the 2026–2027 school year, athletic clearance looks fundamentally different for Florida students.
Thanks to Florida’s “Second Chance Act,” all incoming 9th-grade student-athletes—and any students in grades 10–12 participating in a high school sport for the first time—must pass an electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG) screening before they can step onto the field or court.
Why the EKG Requirement Matters
A routine sports physical checks joints and muscles, but it cannot map the electrical pathways of the heart. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) remains the leading non-traumatic cause of death among young athletes, and the underlying conditions usually show zero daily symptoms.
An EKG is a quick, painless, and completely non-invasive 10-second test. It can detect 60% to 95% of serious, hidden heart conditions that a standard stethoscope exam misses entirely. Under the law, your child will be placed on an athletic hold and barred from tryouts if their FHSAA EL1 ECG Screening Form is not submitted.
The Express Docs Advantage
While a tech-app or a mobileMD home visit might offer a quick checkup on your living room couch, dealing with cardiac safety requires real clinical reliability and professional equipment.
- On-Site Clinical Machinery: Both our East and West Delray locations feature advanced, built-in EKG testing equipment for instant, accurate tracings. (EKG $75.00)
- One-Stop Sports Physicals: We handle the required sports physical and the EKG at the exact same time under one roof. (EKG w/ Sports Physical =$69.00.)
- Local Physician Accountability: Led by Delray Beach founder Roy Musoff, MD, our local team walks you through your results and handles your forms directly. A doctor will review the EKG screenings immediately. On rare occasions, a precautionary consultation with a cardiologist may be recommended for further diagnostic clearance. You never have to deal with an automated app customer service line.
- No Appointment Needed: Skip the volatile app delivery windows and last-minute cancellations. Just walk into our clinic 7 days a week and walk out cleared.
