National Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month and the goal is to focus on nutrition by making small changes to your eating style to help you live a healthy life.

Here are some simple steps recommended by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to eat a variety of nutritious foods every day:

Include healthful foods from all food groups
Hydrate
Learn how to read nutrition facts panels
Practice portion control
Take time to enjoy your food

Planning meals in advance every week can help you to choose healthy recipes to make during the week, for school, work and even while traveling. A great resource to help get started with these modifications is MyPlate, which offers tips for healthful eating, such as:

Focus on whole fruits
Vary your veggies
Make half your grains whole grains (wheat bread, brown rice, oatmeal, etc)
Vary your protein foods by choosing leaner sources, such as round steaks and roast, skinless poultry, as well as fish, shellfish, eggs, beans and seeds
Drink and eat less sodium, saturated fats and added sugars

The goal of National Nutrition Month is to encourage everyone to make small goals and changes that will have a powerful, cumulative effect on health. For more information visit www.NationalNutritionMonth.org or www.eatright.org.
